Tools I use: WordPress
Oh boy, I’ve been a WordPress fan for a looooong time. I started working with blogging platforms back in the early 2000s at my job as an instructional technology specialist. We used Movable Type at that point but I quickly switched us to WordPress when I discovered how much easier it was to install and use.
Then, we went to WordPress Multi User (WPMU) for a college-wide blogging platform as I thought everyone should have access to a free and easy way to express themselves on the web. And, along the way, I have built dozens of websites for myself and friends for both personal and professional/business reasons.
So, when it was time to make this here website, of course I turned to my trusty pal. WordPress can be daunting but it really is pretty easy to get the basics down once you understand the difference between “post” and “page” and what plugins are and what they can do. I know it helps that I also speak HTML, CSS and a little bit of Javascript so I don’t mind looking under the hood every now and then to see how things work.
If I was a brand new person who had no technical background, WordPress may be a good option if you have someone who can help you get started. If not, I would look at Carrd. The pro account is really inexpensive and it is super easy to get up and running with a custom domain.
But, for me, I’ll stick with WordPress for a good long time. It is consistently updated, works for my needs and offers loads of themes to customize to your hearts content.
