Tools I use: Uninterruptible Power Supply

I live in a place that has many thunderstorms. And, when I first moved in, my electricity was interrupted a LOT. So, an uninterruptible power supply (or UPS) became an essential tool for me and my electronic life. Much more than a surge protector (which are great, also!), this keeps the power turned on for a while…even if the power is off on my street for any reason.

You can spend a lot or a little less than a lot on a UPS. The main cost is for the size of the battery. The larger the battery – the larger amount of things you can keep powered OR the longer you can keep something powered on in a blackout.

I opted for a medium sized UPS so I can operate my computer and recording equipment for a short amount of time but, let’s face it, no voice actor is going to be recording in a thunderstorm. But, at least I can at least save a file and shut things down nicely rather than having something suddenly disappear due to a power failure.

If you rely on online and other electronic media for your work or entertainment, a UPS is a good, solid investment.
