Why Voiceover Artists Use Nebulizers for Vocal Health
My voice is an instrument, and as such, it needs proper maintenance. That’s where my nebulizer comes into action. I used to think of them as a treatment device for asthma or other respiratory illnesses, but it has become an essential tool for keeping my vocal cords in peak performing condition.
I am asking my voices to deliver hours of consistent, clear performance whether narrating a complex scientific documentary or an audio drama, my vocal cords need to stay hydrated and healthy. My nebulizer delivers moisture directly to the throat and vocal cords through a fine mist, which is far more effective than simply drinking water and keeps me going.
Mist Matters
When I’m spending hours in my recording booth (which tends to be hot and dry), my vocal tissues can become dehydrated quickly. Of course, then can lead to that scratchy quality nobody wants to hear in professional audio. The nebulizer sends mist directly to the vocal cords so they can get the moisture immediately – which is much better than just drinking water (don’t get me wrong, that is still VERY important)
Using a nebulizer before and sometimes during sessions keeps everything happy. I think of it as preventative care – maintaining my vocal health now rather than fixing problems later.
My longer form narrations, like audiobooks and audio dramas, are really where the nebulizer comes in handy the most! If you want to know more about my studio setup, check out my Studio Setup page.
